RESPONSIVE WEB DESIGN

YBB's journey to connect with a diverse audience through a compassionate approach to mental health.

One of the challenges facing YBB was catering to such a broad demographic. YBB needed to develop a tone of voice and a brand image that would relate to the youngest and oldest ends of the customer base.

01

Project

Youthbeyondblue (YBB) is a nonprofit organisation helping raise awareness of mental health amongst young people (12-25 years old).

YBB wanted to redefine their online service and provide holistic, educational information to their audience in a format that was responsive,
user-friendly and respectful of the vulnerable emotional aspect of dealing with mental health matters.

02

Immersion

Stakeholder workshops

Working closely with YBB team and their audience representatives we drafted customer profiles and mapped out their journeys, gaining a better understanding of the needs and expectations customers have before, during and after visiting the YBB website.

Together we reviewed a range of websites, gathering feedback on design requirements and technical feasibility.

03

UX/UIĀ

We worked through several design sprints, collaborating closely with the development team to ensure techinical feasibility of the website. Design sprints focused on iterating information architecture, content strategy and wireframing of the responsive YBB website and content development.

04

Final designs were prototyped and tested with the end-users. The participants were asked to describe their experience in three words. The most commonly said words were: helpful, comforting, informative and colorful.

Dealing with and learning about mental health issues can be overwhelming. Complex terminology often adds to the stigma attached to mental health issues.

To reduce stigma and make learning about mental health easier, we improved the site's information architecture, used conversational language, added white space for calmness, and employed colorful highlights. We also used illustrations and smaller bites of information instead of text-heavy content.
